The Roses

“Lizzie, come on! P.E.’s next!” Belle yelled into Elizabeth’s ear. Elizabeth jolted awake from her daydream complaining, “Okay Bells, I’m coming.” She noticed that her friend put her short, straight black hair into a pony tail that framed her pale face.
“Hey! Your mood necklace is blue-green,” laughed Belle.
“Yeah. It matches my eyes!” Lizzie exclaimed, as she put her long, curly blond hair in a pony tail too.
As they walked side-by-side Lizzie noticed their differences. She is tall, skinny, and tan, but her friend is shorter and on the chubby side.
“Isn’t it funny that we can be so different yet still be friends?” said Lizzie surprised.
“Not really. I’ve had a lot of friends like you, they’re all the same,” Belle calmly responded as she walked away into the gym, leaving Lizzie standing in the hallway, speechless.
When Lizzie walked into the gym she saw that her class was already stretching (which was weird because they only start when everybody is in the room.) “Ah Elizabeth, When did you get to school today?” the gym teacher asked.
“I’ve been here all day. Why?” Lizzie questioned.
“Oh, well everybody thought you were absent,” the teacher answered while she motioned to the class. Lizzie just stood there, shocked.
“But, but... I was just talking to Belle,” she stammered. Elizabeth looked at Belle, but she just shrugged and went back to stretching.
“Well now that you’re all here, we will be starting volleyball today,” the teacher announced to the class.
“YYYEEEEEEEEESSSSS!!!” screamed some of the annoying boys as everyone cheered.
“But first!” the gym teacher said raising her voice, “We have two new students. Class, please welcome Sophia and Anna!” As Sophia and Anna walked in arm-in-arm one person in the back said hi, but other than that you could hear a pin drop. “Okay, well anyway please get in groups of four then wait for further instruction,” the teacher ordered the class. “Yo, Sophia, Anna! Come over here with us!” Belle motioned to herself and Elizabeth, who was standing beside her. “Okay!” answered Sophia for both of them, even though Anna looked concerned, as Sophia pulled Anna behind her. “Okay, good. Now split your team in half, two people will be on one side of the net and the other two on the other side,” directed the teacher. Lizzie walked to one side of the net and expected Belle to follow her, but instead when she looked through the net she saw that familiar pale, round face with a short black pony tail. “But Belle... we’re always on the same team,” Elizabeth shockingly gasped. “Well I want her on my team,” argued Sophia. “But...,” Lizzie stammered. “Oh deal Liz, gosh,” Belle muttered, annoyed. “Guess you’re on my team,” said Anna trying to sound enthusiastic, but still disappointed. “First we will volley for the serve,” the teacher told the class. As the teacher passed out the volley balls Belle and Sophia were whispering furiously, occasionally pointing at the not-so-smart students. Lizzie turned to say something about volley ball to Anna but as she reached up to catch the volleyball that the gym teacher has just thrown to her, Belle ran over shoved Elizabeth out of the way and caught the ball for herself as if it was a bar of gold.
“Elizabeth! Are you okay?!” asked Anna, completely shocked by the whole event. “Yeah, I’m fine,” Lizzie reassured Anna then sharply turned to Belle, angrily saying, “What’s the matter with you?!”
“Oh I’m sorry. I didn’t see you there,” Belle said sarcastically, with a rude tone to her voice. When Belle walked back to her side of the net, with the ball still in her hands, Sophia gave her a high-five then whispered something to her and turned and snickered at Elizabeth, still lying on the floor. When they volleyed some how Sophia and Belle kept making Lizzie and Anna turn around at just the right moments so they ended up winning all the volleys. By the time the teacher got everyone to stop fooling around and when the volleys were finished, it was time for the next period, science.
“So this is what will happen. We will be doing a project on the six world biomes. And because I am in a good mood today I will let you pick your own partners, in a way,” Mr. Rixpy, the science teacher, said loudly with a scowl to get everyone to quiet down. “Yesss,” some of the kids whispered to themselves. “To make it fair I will pick sticks, and don’t worry I made sticks for Anna and Sophia too,” he told the class, trying to be humorous. “The first person is... oh what are the chances of that? It’s Sophia!” he chuckled. Anna started to stand up to walk over to Sophia’s seat but instead she called the name no one expected, Belle. Anna slumped back in her seat, worried that she might be, or is, losing her only friend. “Belle it is!” called out Mr. Rixpy. “Now Belle can’t be my partner! What am I gonna do now?” Elizabeth thought to herself, confused by the whole day. Mr. Rixpy called a few more students and finally, he called Elizabeth’s name. She looked around the room to see who she could choose from. There was only some boys left and one girl, Anna. “Anna, do you wanna’ to be my partner?” she asked hopefully. Anna looked around the room at the boys.
“Sure, I guess,” Anna sadly replied, still wanting to be with Sophia. As Mr. Rixpy called the rest of the boys, Elizabeth could see Belle and Sophia making plans to meet at each others houses.
“Hey,” Lizzie called to Anna as the dismissal bell rang,
“Do you want to come to my house tomorrow after school to work on the science project?” she asked Anna, hoping to get Belle jealous.
“That sounds great!” Anna answered, sounding much happier, “I’ll bring the poster.”
The next few afternoons Anna came over to work on the science project at Lizzie’s house. On the last day they were working on the project, Anna said, “You know, we make a pretty good team, this looks great!”
“Yeah, we do,” replied Lizzie happily. Then Lizzie blurted out, “Do you want to be friends?”
“What?” asked Anna, totally shocked by the question.
“I said do you what to be my friend?” said Lizzie repeating herself.
Anna paused, “I thought we were already friends.”
Lizzie smiled saying as they hugged, “You’re right, best friends.”
When Anna and Lizzie got their project grade back it said on he top, “A+++, you girls did a great job! P.S. Meet me at my desk after class.” They both dreaded what he was going to say to them. When the end of class came they nervously walked over to his desk. He smiled saying, “You two are very unique. You are the sweetest and most caring students I have ever had; you may as well be two roses in a patch of dead weeds.” As Anna and Elizabeth grew up they became beautiful and kind women and where ever they go everyone says they are just like two perfect red roses.
